BRIEF DESCRIPTION
All students have trouble knowing how to start a paragraph and stay on topic. This problem is even worse when trying to write a 3 to 5 paragraph essay. This interactive lesson uses sentence starters to help frame studewnts writing with differentiation by ESL level
PROCEDURES
Goal(s):
ESL and all 5th grade students will become better writers by becoming more familiar with sentence frames and using them in the writing process by using the document camera to present them to the whole class and using the projector and internet to share a video about "surviving 5th grade".
Specific Objectives:
Students will be sharing sentence frames and learn writing strategies for 5th grade ELA compositions by sharing their work using the document camera and a projector and the internet or video camera to illustrate 5th grade survival success.
Required Materials:
paper, pencils, markers, crayons, colored pencils, document camera, video camera or tower attached to the projector..
Anticipatory Set (Lead-in):
Using projector, computer, and short you tube video "captain Kirk and the writing process, the teacher will show how. writing a short 5 paragraph essay can be learned by using different sentence frames to make the essay hang together correctly and with strength. The teacher will show how different sentence frames can be used to formulate a topic paragraph that will make writing a simple five paragraph essay like reading a road map. Discussion on what road maps do to make getting some place easier. Teacher will use first the projector to set the stage with any number of short you tube videos on the writing process. Teacher will develop sentence strips for different topic sentences and show what they look like and how they are used in writing by showing them to the class and rearranging them under the document camera.
Lesson Plan Procedure:
Essay: What do you wish you knew before starting 5th grade? The "5th grade Survival Guide"
Students will brain storm different Survival strategies for surviving 5th grade.
Studentw will be divided into homogenious groups of four by their Celdt level. Each group will be given a differnet topic sentence frame depending upon their CELDT level. CELDT 1, 2, 3: There are three main points important in suriviving 5th grade. CELDT 4 and 5 and English only: In any grade there are certain survival strategies that must be understood before you can have a successful year. Here are three of the most important. Students are encouraged to come up with their own sentence frames that must be approved by the class.
Each group will prewrite using the sentence frame and classic development of each survival technique in a paragraph of no less than 5 sentences for each paragraph . The last paragraph will be discussed by the teacher with another video presented and a sentence frame guide showing how to wrap up an easy five paragraph essay. Teacher will hold table discussions with each groupafter the rough draft is completed. The techer will make sure the students understand the writing process through table discussion. Teacher will then allow the final draft to be written: each paragraph except the last having a different scribe at the table who is responsible for that paragraph. The last paragraph will be written by a scribe elected by the group and everyone in the group will be responsible for helping the scribe show how the paragraph follows the framing process. The final event will be asking the fourth grade classes to be the audience and come to hear the three best essays presented again for their benefit. .
Closure (Reflect Anticipatory Set):
Each group will present their essay under the document camera, showing their sentence structures by underlining them in red pencil and explaining why their "Survial Guide" will be easily understood and used by an incoming 4th grade student. Students will be encouraged to download their own short videos describing their take on surviving 5th grade. These videos will be prescreened and approved by the teacher and will be no longer than 5 minutes. Each member of the team will be responsible for explaining one paragraph and all of the group will be responsible for the last paragraph. The grading will be done by the whole class using a four point rubric dicussed before the projects are presented. After a presentation to the 4th grade, all essays will be bound and presented as a book to each 4th grade class.
Assessments & notes
Plan for Independent Practice:
Practice is inherent in the writing process including prewriting, techer conference after the rough draft and presentation to the class and to the 4th grade audience.
Assessment Based on Objectives:
Class will be given a check sheet for each essay based on the four point rubric designed. Students will grade the essay on a 1 through 4 scale. The three best essays will then be picked to present to the 4th grade and then all essays will be bound in a book and given to the 4th grade students.
Possible Connections to Other Subjects:
This is for fifth grade ELA but other subjects will be mentioned.
Adaptations & Extensions:
This is an awesome final activity in May for ELA 5th grade. Sentence frames will have been used all year and for other essays so the process will not be brand new for the students and the teacher illustrations may show this.
