BRIEF DESCRIPTION
As a preread lesson for the Outsiders by SE Hinton. Students are givien a short presentation where they are asked to reflect on their lives and current trends vs. past trends. After the presentation students take an on-line adventrue quest through parts of Hintons life, visiting her home town and setting for her books as well as an online field trip to her high school. They also look at what was going on in the 60's in the United States.
 
PROCEDURES
 
Goal(s):
Give the students some background information on the novel's setting and the author who wrote it.
Have the students read articles, sift through information and analyze the content. Navigate through an online activity using common online conventions.

 
Specific Objectives:
Students will…
-participate in a group discussion where they will listening, processing and responding to specific topics
-read several articles and pull out important information to discuss in their written responses
-toggle between two websites to gather information from one and respond in the other.
-use common website features to navigate through an on-line activity

 
Required Materials:
Computers with internet capability
Presentation- either in google docs or PowerPoint
Trackstar lesson assignment
Online articles and sites
Google Form

 
Anticipatory Set (Lead-in):
using the powerpoint presenation linked to this lesson... share parts of Hinton's life, times and culture which will frame the setting for the Outsiders.
 
Lesson Plan Procedure:
-In the teaching area of the library Show and discuss the Getting to Know Hinton presenation (10/15 min)
-Explain and show the webquest they will be embarking on next
-Transition students to the library comuters and help then navigate to the webquest link
- Have them complete the webquset online
-On the following day in the classroom, discuss their answers and the experience overall from the previous day
- Begin reading the novel
 
Closure (Reflect Anticipatory Set):
Using the spreadsheet of their answers, pick and choose several ones to bring up as examples as well as statistics of their answers. At the following day before they begin reading the novel, spead about 10/15 min discussing the author and setting.
