Brief Description:
Students will learn how to type their name, highlight it, change the font and learn how to change the font size.
Goal(s):
Teach kindergarteners how to use the "Caps" button as well as how to highlight to change font and font size
Specific Objectives:
See above
Required Materials:
Computers, document camera, computer set up with a smart board or video display.
Word processing program Word or a kids program like "KidPix"
poster of a keyboard
Printer
Anticipatory Set (Lead-in):
When we write our name what kind of letter do we need at the beginning?
Do you know how to do that on a computer?
That's what we are going to learn about today! It's called a "shift" button.
Lesson Plan Procedure:
Show students on a poster or through a document camera where the "Shift" button is. Show how it is on both sides! Demonstrate how to hold the shift button down at the same time as the letter of their first name.
Have the students type out their name.
Review: Does it have a capital at the beginning of your name? Yes, good, now I want you do to it again. Hit the return button twice so there is room in between.
Now that you have your name written twice, we are going to "highlight" your name. Let me show you how it is done. Take the mouse and click at the end of your name (don't let go of the mouse, keep it "clicked", now slide the mouse over your name until it all changes colors. Now you can let go. Let me see if everyone has done it! Yes! Good job! Now go to the font bar and click on it. Now a bunch of different "fonts" will be displayed. You can click on any font you want. It will change the way the letters look. Watch mine! (Demonstrate several different fonts). Now that you know how to change the font, now we are going to make your name BIGGER!! Press the return key two times. Type your name again! Highlight it and go to the size button (show on your computer how to find it). Now I want everyone to make thier name the size 48! Type your name again, but this time, make it teeny tiny!! You may also change the font if you wish.
Allow students to print out the paper that has their name typed 4 different ways.
Closure (Reflect Anticipatory Set):
Have the students circle their favorite way they wrote their names and be able to share what they liked about it!
Plan for Independent Practice:
We go to the computer lab 1 time per week for 25 minutes. The students will be able to practice their "name typing skills" each week that we go!
Assessment Based on Objectives:
Whenever we go to the computer lab, the students are required to write their name on their paper in order to print out their work. They will be able to use a capital properly and change the font as desired.
Possible Connections to Other Subjects:
This is just a precursor to what they will need to do in other grades, but this gives them a good start on how to change fonts and use capitals.
Adaptations and Extensions:
Additional Notes:
We use a program called "KidPix" in our computer lab. While the font and size changes are similar to using word, instead of hitting return two times, they just click in another section of the screen and then retype their names.
